13-Jul-06 Installing NoWeeds Exhaust Diverters Part 1

A rodding family

Before starting the next series of articles, I want to add one more comment about the recent driving VS building debate. I received a ton of e-mail from people telling me what they like about the hobby. All were very civil (I wouldn't expect anything less from car guys and gals – they're a great bunch) and each person mentioned what enthused them the most about our hobby.

There will always be debates about driving/trailering, fiberglass/steel, building/buying, painted/primed, etc. etc. because there are so many ways to enjoy this hobby. The truth is that we need them all. I think John Vernon (responsible for project33's artist rendering) said it best;

"In my humble opinion, everyone is right.. then again, no one is. Show me 10 people who love the hobby, and I'll show you 10 different ways to enjoy it. From rats to queens, we need them all. It's the diversity that makes the hobby so great. I pity those who are prejudicial to the ‘my way or the highway' type of thinking... it's precisely that diversity that perpetuates the hobby. It's amazing to see the spill-over contributions from one type of vehicle to the next. Sleek scallops going high-tech, discs hidden under drum covers, etc., etc.. We thirst for change, we honor those who break from the mold."

Thanks John, well put!

Back in December 2004, I teased you with an article about the NoWeeds power exhaust diverters that were added to the project as an afterthought [Article: A brief diversion]. If I would have planned ahead for them, I would have used their standard dual butterfly units. If I had, I'd be able to bypass the muffler system altogether. Instead, we added a single butterfly to the back of the muffler. The sound coming right out of a muffler is definitely louder than when it runs through a tailpipe. Especially when that tailpipe makes a U-turn out the front of the muffler and into side pipes.

Before I start, let me tell you a bit about the NoWeeds guys, or should I say NoWeeds Brothers. NoWeeds (a loose acronym for No Weld Exhaust Diverter Systems) is owned and operated by the Koenig brothers, Brad, Doug & Steve (initials BDS :) and what a creative bunch of brothers they are. The whole family is into cool vehicles that look sharp and sit right, including their daily drivers.

Even the youngest Koenig members have nice rides, as seen here. I believe the blanket was impeding driver visibility. Live and learn.

Here's an under-construction shot for you. The quick-change cover is off in this photo. Amazing work for someone that young :)
