16-Sep-03 Mounting the Seats Part 1

On the edge of my seat

Image
Before mounting the seats I ran a piece of tape between the two body bolts that the cage mounts to in the door openings. This will be our straight line to work from.
ImageAs I said earlier, I must be a giant because my head almost touched the roof even when I'm sitting on the floor, so I'll need to mount the seats as low as possible and this is the stuff that will make it happen.

Pictured is an assortment of 1-1/2 inch washers with a 5/16-inch hole, some grade 8 bolts and four 3/16 x 1-1/2 inch wide metal plates.
ImageI promised Tea's Design that I wouldn't show the underside of their seats so I blocked out everything but the mounts for this photo. Normally the seat tracks would be mounted to the long braces where the bolt heads are showing. I moved them inward by attaching cross braces to the original mounting holes with a half-inch stack of washers as spacers. Before you do the same thing you should know that this limits the travel of your tracks! Because of my roll cage sidebars, I can only use about 4-inches of travel and that's all I have left after modifying the tracks.
ImageBecause I'm mounting the tracks directly to the floor I had to move the seat release to the top side of the mount. The track is upside down in this photo. The rivets shown here were ground off and replaced by stainless allen bolts from my MMS Stainless button head kit.
ImageIf I can pass along one seat mounting tip, this is it. Always install your seats so that when the seat is all the way forward, the track extends out the back – never the other way around. If you don't do it this way your track will be visible when the seats are all the way back. It's amazing how many guys overlook this.
