Modifying the A/C Evaporator Part 1 |
Re-Routing the Defrosters
I slid the evaporator in place to snap a photo before I make a minor modification to it. As you can (hopefully) see the vacuum switches mounted back there makes it almost impossible to hook up defroster ducts. This was sort of an oversight on my part because originally I wasn't going to have defrosters. I've since decided to hook them up and don't want to relocate the vacuum switches, so I'm going to re-rout the defroster air out the front of the unit. |
The defroster ducts on the back of the evaporator look like this. In this photo the defroster (foam covered) door is closed. |
This photo shows the defroster door open, allowing air to enter the defroster ducts. I'm going to re-route the air from these openings into one large duct that exits the front of the evaporator box. |
I'm going to use an extra rectangular A/C louver I have laying around for the new duct fitting. |
The louver portion of the vent will be removed (at the seam) and rest of it will be molded into the evaporator box as shown. The new larger single duct will fall directly between two of the heat/air ducts and link directly to the backside of the dash. |
The first step in making the air-routing modification was to slice off the duct mounting flanges in the evaporator. |
