17-Aug-03 Installing the Throttle Cable

Getting Lucky!

ImageThis may be one of the easier articles I write during this project. Running the throttle cable through the firewall isn't very difficult. You just need to make sure your coming out on the other side in an area that doesn't interfere with something and use the correct size bit for the cable you use.

The pedal was held in its normal position "at rest" using a wood screw and a bread tie. A mark was made on the firewall directly behind the upper arm cable mounting point. After checking to make sure everything was out of the way on the other side, the hole was drilled. The spark plug wires needed to be tied out of the way with a piece of wire to make sure one didn't get nicked with the drill.
ImageThe hole was drilled and the cable ferule was installed in the firewall. As it turns out the ferule was the perfect length to go through the fiberglass and 1/2-inch plywood – lucky break.
ImageThe pivoting throttle cable end is held in place with a C-clip. I'm thinking of having a double-sided end made to replace this one so the electronic cruise control can pull the accelerator from the other side. That way the entire cruise control system will remain hidden inside the car. I'm not the first person to think of doing it this way. The guys at Dakota Digital tell me it's been done with success many times before.
ImageThe cable slides in and out like butter and I'm really happy with the pedal placement! Everything above the bottom of the accelerator pedal pivot will be hidden with a removable panel.

On the other side of the firewall the cable couldn't exit the firewall at a better location! It will be a straight shot beside the blower with the T.V. cable entering below it.

I'm going to figure out a way to clip the spark plug wire loom to the back of each valve cover. This will keep things nice and neat and keep the wires from rubbing on the paint once the car is finished. The plug wires will rest well under the throttle cable when that happens.

It's time to design a linkage and throttle return spring mount. A special linkage system is necessary to make sure that nothing sticks up past the center pivot of the injector hat or it could make contact with the hood under acceleration. More on this later.
